I don’t know about you but I love a good scarf. A decorative fashion scarf can really change a basic look and allow you to add some flair and uniqueness through different patterns and textures. Now storing scarves can be a different story as they can quickly end up all over the place. Over the years I’ve learned the best ways to store your scarves and am sharing them with you as we prepare for the fall and winter months ahead!
Whether scarves are for fashion, or for warmth both need hung and organized. As beautiful as they are, it’s easy for them to be simply tossed or placed in a temporary location that may not get addressed. For some people they hang their scarf with their coats, for others they fold them in a bin or even worse just tossed in the closet mixed in with other clothing items and accessories. Using a scarf to help accessorize an outfit or add some flair is simple, shouldn’t storing scarves be the same? I’ve done all the research for you on the best ways to store scarves in your space.
Scarf Care
A note before we jump into organization is about caring for your scarfs with properly cleaning them. Scarfs are easily one of those items that get worn dozens of times without a second thought. However, a scarf should be washed as it can cold dirt and bacteria as easily as other garments. As well, your scarf is often up around your neck and near your face, where we want to try to keep germs and bacteria away from.
Most scarves come with a label that shows the materials used and how to care for it, follow these directions. If you’re unsure use a mild detergent and wash it with cold water in your sink gently with your hands. For myself, most of my scarfs can be tossed in the wash on a gentle cycle and then I hang dry them. It’s a good idea to set aside a load where you might wash all your scarves or get into the habit of once or twice a month taking inventory of what needs to be washed. Now onto the best ways to store scarves!
In Closet Storing Scarves
One of the best and easiest ways to store your scarves is in a closet. Now, depending on the size of your living space this may or may not be a viable option to you. Closet location depends on yourself, some people prefer to keep scarves near the front of their house with their jackets, while others prefer to keep them in a bedroom for when they’re putting together outfits. Some do both depending on the scarf! Either way, using existing closet space is a great way to help organize and store your scarves.
One of my favourite ways is by using a scarf hanging storage rack made specifically for scarves. It holds multiple scarves and easily displays them so you can see what you own and pick out the best scarf to match your needs. It also keeps them hanging in an organized fashion that helps reduce them getting tangled and knotted with other scarves.
Another option for the best way to store scarves is using a multiple layer hanging organizer that can be set up vertically or horizontally to display and hang scarves from your closet clothing rod. You can also use a tie hanging storage organizer for scarves as well, they’re similar in size and shape and can be well organized and sorted with this storage option!
Drawer Storage
Do you have some extra drawer space in your living space? Using a drawer for storing your scarves is a great way to quickly and easily organize and sort them, as well as minimize the space they take up. Now for myself drawer space is always limited so this is not my preferred way. I know several folks who love to have them nicely and neatly organized within their dressers or chest of drawers.
When looking at using a drawer make sure to take some time to measure the space in the drawer and buy or make the appropriate sized storage containers. For example, using a fabric divider it is easy to alter it’s shape to get into your drawer, and is easy to clean and maintain. You can also purchase a plastic organizer that allows for a firm shape and strong hold around your scarves as they’re stored in the drawer, it’s also easy to clean and maintain these. If you have dresser or drawers that are a unique or odd shape you can also purchase theses dividers alone that don’t have sides and they can be adapted into the size and shape you need.
Let’s say you don’t have drawer space, but you really want your scarves in a drawer. You can buy a drawer organizer than can sit on any surface and you can place them into drawers without sacrificing any of your already existing drawer space. I have a couple of these and find them super helpful especially when drawer space is limited!
Hanging Storage
So, we’ve covered closet storage and drawer storage, maybe those aren’t for you or maybe you just want to see what other options exist. Well one of the best ways to store your scarves is by hanging them over doors or on walls. It takes up very little space and keeps them out in the open so you can see and use them as you wish!
One of the hanging storage options is over the door, this can be either hooking it over top of the door and hanging it off a hook or nail behind the door. You can use this hanging scarf and scrunchie organizer as it hangs behind your door or on the wall, you simply use a nail to hang it and you’re done! If you live in a space where you can’t put holes in the wall, or you just simply don’t want to do this in your space you can also look at over the door hook scarf organization storage.
If you don’t have a lot of scarves or like to have them near your front door you can also drill into your wall hanging hooks to hang them off of! You can drill and hang single hooks or multiple hooks to hang multiple scarves!
Off Season Storage
Last but not least, how to store your scarves when its not time to wear them. Now, some folks do wear them year-round, and storage might not be something that is needed. Or you might have really light, silky scarves for summer that you don’t need to have out all the other months of the year. Make sure before you store your scarves you wash them either by hand or in a washing machine to ensure they’re clean before being put away. You can place a cotton ball or two with essential oils on it if you’d like them to keep a fresh scent in storage.
Depending on the number of scarves you have you can have small storage options or large. For smaller option you can look into smaller boxes, and smaller storage bags to store them during the off season. Insightful post! I love the idea of organising my scarves in the drawer all neatly folded!
We have plenty of scarves and always struggled to fit them anywhere. They now live in a wicker box so we can have easy access to them and keep them all neatly folded so we can find the right one in seconds!
These are such great ideas. I always have a hard time figuring out where to store all my scarves.
I adore these ideas. I have a few scarves that are hanging in the closet right now, draped around the hook of the hangers. Just like your post says – it’s easy for them to get tangled and/or damaged. Plus, it’s hard to keep them clean that way.
Loved the idea of hanging them on a hook from a door. That’s a perfect solution when you’re low on storage space. 🙂

I love the looks of the scarf organizer! I have a nice collection of scarves that I love to wear in the fall, but have always kept them in my drawers since I have nothing to hang them on. The scrunchie hanger is also a handy idea.

Great information. Storing my scarves has been an issue for me. I usually store them in a box and leave the one I need by the door so it makes it easier for me to grab it in my way. It is nice to have other options to try.
