Just a couple of weeks ago I went and got my first facial. That’s right I went 30+ years without getting a facial, and now I don’t think I’ll go back! I always thought of facials as being luxury skincare and that it was for the rich and famous as a way to pamper yourself. I had never really looked into the benefits of getting a facial for your skin and addressing skin concerns. After my procedure, I was well versed in many of the benefits of getting a professional facial compared to my at-home facial masks bought from skincare stores.
Yes, there is a difference between DIY/store-bought facials and professional facials.

What I did before
Before getting a facial you should not put any makeup on or any facial serum or creams on. It’s important to have a clean face that is a blank canvas for the facial. If you put makeup or creams on it can be less effective in removing dead skin cells with getting deep into your pores!
As well, before getting my facial I did my research on what type of facial I wanted given my skin care conditions. For myself, I had sensitive skin that is very reactive (red spots). So, for me I was focused on being full of antioxidants, reducing fine lines and calming properties. I spoke to the esthetician beforehand about what I wanted in the facial treatment and my skin concerns.

Getting a facial
Getting my facial was a soothing, relaxing, and peaceful experience. I was able to lay back and have the facial applied to my face. It was cool and was a jelly texture so it felt really smooth and silky! The esthetician asked if I would like my eyes covered. I was taken aback as with at-home ones you can’t cover your eyes! She explained it helps with reducing fine lines around the eyes and brightening the eye area and was totally safe, as long as I wasn’t claustrophobic. So I said yes and she applied it over my eyes.
If you’re asking how long does a facial take the answer is not long at all! I then got to relax for about 20 minutes while the facial worked with magic! During this time I was able to just let my mind wander, take some time for me and not worry about much else. The products that were used for my skin type also smelled amazing! It had quite a few berries in the mixture and those scents were phenomenal and really relaxing for aromatherapy.

After the treatment
Once it was time for the facial to come off my skin felt smooth. I don’t mean regular smooth, it felt incredibly soft and smooth in a way I had never felt. I asked how often I should be getting a facial. The esthetician let me know about 4-6 weeks is recommended, most people see a lot of benefits in getting a facial once a month! She said at minimum she would recommend when the seasons change (summer to fall, etc).
Procedures such as chemical peels and microneedling can have different timing depending on the treatments. I then asked about the different treatment options and prices, most of the treatments ranged from 60$ to 399$. Check-in on where to get a facial and check for their local pricing. My first time facial it was free and included in a package I had with the spa as an extra!

What I learned about my skin
I learned so much about my skin during this process and changed some of my skincare routines after having this facial done. First off, I learned more about the different skin types and what category my skin fell into. Before this, I was just guessing what my skin type was. I also asked questions about how to help reduce the reactive zones on my face and learned that using a facial spray that had Hypochlorous Acid was so helpful at reducing those areas as overall opening my pores.
I also learned about the importance of professional facials and how they can help with doing deep treatments for your skin. It’s important to keep up good skin care at home in between with masks as well, but a professional facial does help get deeper. For example, professional facials can help with exfoliating skin, removing impurities, removing dead skin, and balancing excess oil.

So what’s next with facials?
Yes, I will definitely continue getting a facial at a spa near me and keep up with routine facial procedures! I’m also still learning more about my skin and adjusting my products as needed to ensure I’m giving my skin what it needs. Since the facial and changing to the use of hypochlorous acid, I’ve been HUGE improvements in my skin. As well, I will definitely be adding facials to part of my summer self care routines! Have you been to the spa for a facial? How was your facial therapy experience?
Oh wow, this inspired me to book a facial haha! I hope I can find one nearby that’s not too expensive because sometimes they are insanely pricey. But I’ve always wanted to get one and I LOVE going to spas.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have never gotten a facial before. I am scared that the products might reach badly with my face. But maybe I will sometime soon
Amazing – honestly finding one that wasn’t too pricey was actually easier than I thought! It’s so worth it, your skin will thank you! 🙂
Amazing to hear – sounds like a great self care idea especially being a busy working mom! I hope if you get a facial you enjoy it!
I’d recommend chatting with the staff first, outline your concerns so they can address them and explain what products are used before you get your facial 🙂 I hope if you get one you enjoy it!
