Whether you are someone who likes the taste of plain water or you like a little flavour to your beverage you should think about adding essential oils to drinking water. I’m someone who loves water, just as it is! With that in mind, I do love adding a flavour every now and then just to well spice things up! Not to mention all the added health and wellness benefits that come from adding flavour. I used to love cutting up fresh fruit and adding it to my water, but alas life got busy, and I rarely do that anymore. This is where drinking essential oils come in handy as you can add them to your water!
Adding essential oils to drinking water is one of my favourite ways to lightly add some flavour to water. Before I began adding oils to my water, I did a ton of research! It’s important to really understand the oils you’re using and how to safely use oils with your water. Adding essential oils to drinking water not only provides an awesome flavour to your water, but it also can add health benefits!
I use Revive Essential Oils for all my oils as I trust their brand and science behind their oils. If you’re interested in Revive essential oils click here to get 10$! Curious about what must have accessories you need for essential oils? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered.

How to safely ingest essential oils
Safely ingesting essential oils is so important. I do not recommend grabbing and oil and putting it into your drink without doing your research. First, you need to research the grade, and the make-up of the oil, most reputable oil companies have a data sheet for each oil you can look into. Make sure to give this a good review. Once you have done your research, do your research on the essential oil grade and company then you can begin to prepare to take internally. Not all oils are able to be ingested! You need to ensure it is safe to ingest.
Okay so you’ve done the research, you’ve learned if you can ingest the oil. Now, it’s time to do your research into ingesting oils safely. How much essential oil to add to the water? Well, I never do more than 2 drops, most of the time I do one drop. You need to ensure that it is more than 4oz of water. For myself, I add 1-2 drops to my 24oz water tumbler. Always use less oil if you’re unsure and use a big glass/ water bottle. I can’t stress this enough, do your research. For myself, I use Dr Mariza Snyder’s Book on Essential Oils as my guide to safe ingesting. Make sure you choose a reputable source such as Dr Snyder for looking into ingesting oils. If you’re ever unsure or have a chronic illness or disease check in with a medical professional before using oils.
Lemon
Lemon essential oil is one of my personal favourites to add to my drinking water. It’s my go-to oil that I always leave on the counter so I can quickly add a drop in the morning. Do you enjoy the fresh taste of lemon in your water? Then this oil is definitely for you!
Lemon is an awesome oil to help with flushing out toxins in your body. It provides a gentle aid for digestion and can help with supporting your respiratory functions. You can add lemon to water, or to your morning smoothies. When adding lemon, you can use an emulsifier, such as honey, add a drop directly to the beverage, or put it into a veggie capsule. For myself I use no more than 1-2 drops of lemon in my big 24oz tumbler, that is the size most water bottles are! It adds a fresh and invigorating flavour to your water and can be quick on the go way to have lemon water without the hassle of carrying around fresh lemons. Because really who wants to do that with our busy lives?

Grapefruit
Grapefruits are such a hassle! When you try to cut one open and scoop it out it typically makes a huge mess! Even the most experienced grapefruit eaters I find still have issues with it being such a messy fruit! Well, grapefruit essential oil saves you the mess and keeps that good flavour to add to your water. Grapefruit has more of a tang to it than lemon and I find it’s an oil I have on certain days when I am wanting that specific flavour. Grapefruit oil in drinking water? Yup, it’s delicious, especially on summer days!
Grapefruit not only tastes great, but it helps with detoxification and cleansing your body when ingested. As well, it prevents water retention and helps to reduce sugar cravings! It also does a great job of supporting a healthy metabolism. Like lemon, you can add this to your water, to your morning smoothie or to a veggie capsule. For myself, I add 1-2 drops to my morning water tumbler and mix in the oil water. Although grapefruit essential oil doesn’t taste exactly like the food, it is very similar and a very refreshing flavour to add to your water to boost flavour!

Tangerine
Now, this is a fun essential oil in water! Tangerine is a sweet flavour, unlike the previous two oils. The tangerine essential oil in drinking water is a great way to add that sweet taste to help when you’re craving a sweet beverage or juice. I find tangerines are so juicy and sweet, but they really are quite messy to eat! By using essential oils instead, you save the mess but still get the flavour in your water and that small taste of sweetness. Honestly, out of all the people I know who ingest essential oils usually tangerine and orange are high up there on the list as it really is such a good substitute.
Tangerine is an oil that is believed to support the immune system and help provide your body with the support needed to fight off illnesses. As well the scent of tangerine helps create an uplifting aroma and can offer a pick-me-up! I like to start my day off with add a drop to my water and mixing it in with honey. It’s one of my go-to flavours in the morning. You can also take it in a veggie capsule as well.

Peppermint
Peppermint is likely an oil you’ve heard me go on about as it has such amazing properties to really help your system. It can help with easing menstrual pain, easing body aches and pains, and promoting productivity. Peppermint is one of those wonderful flavours, I really do enjoy it! It reminds me of comfort and a nice fall day. For me, I really enjoy adding a drop of peppermint to the teas that I make. It does create a very strong aroma of peppermint in the room, as well as in your tea. It’s one of my favourites, however, it’s not for everyone as I’ve given it to a couple of family members, and they aren’t as big of peppermint fans.
Peppermint is a fantastic oil for helping to improve your digestion. Peppermint is also a very stimulating scent, which means it helps wake you up and increase your alertness. Peppermint is a great oil to also help with settling your stomach. You can also use peppermint for a homemade mouthwash, just be sure to do your research beforehand to properly prepare it. My fiancé uses a mixture that includes peppermint essential oils every day, and he loves it. You can also take it within a veggie capsule or as a drop in more than 4oz of water with an emulsifier. I like to use honey as my emulsifier with peppermint oil, I find they blend well together.

Sweet Orange
Like tangerine, adding essential oils to drinking water such as a sweet orange adds a nice sweet citrus flavour to your water. Sweet orange is a fantastic scent to not only smell but to taste within your beverage. It provides a juicy light citrus scent while not overwhelming with aroma or flavour. It’s one of those wonderful summer flavours in my books. Although like tangerine it is slightly different. Tangerine has a stronger aroma as well as more of a fresh scent that is stronger. Sweet orange is a lighter scent and flavour and isn’t as packed as tangerine is with taste. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a light flavour for your water.
Sweet orange has lots of great benefits to your emotional and physical health. It helps with providing a sense of calm, as well as helps with providing a gentle pick me up if you’re in need of some emotional support. It also helps to support a healthy immune system when ingested. For myself, I like to add a drop in the morning to my Tumbler while I’m on the go. You can also add a drop to some tea with honey, or you can add it to a veggie capsule.
As mentioned above it’s very important to do your research to learn how to safely ingest essential oils before doing so. What are some of your favourites to use? Which ones from this list are you going to try out?
These are great tips for essential oil digestion! Thanks for sharing.
This is amazing Alex! I have never had essential oils in my water, but I’m definitely going to try it. Thanks for sharing this guide!
Lovely post, Alex! I have a ton of friends back in post-secondary who ingested essential oils but I’ve never done it before. I love the idea of it though! Especially adding peppermint as I live for peppermint halo on my temples and wrist frequently! Thanks for sharing x

This is interesting. I use essential oils all the time, but never thought of adding them to water. I will do some further research xx
I see drinking watering as a reluctant task; I’d rather drink fizzy pop. I know it’s a bad habit, but water is just blah to me. This is why I loved reading this post, as I didn’t consider adding essential oils to drinking water.
The grapefruit oil sounds perfect for me! I do need help to reduce sugar cravings. I’m also swaying towards peppermint oil, as easing menstrual pain and increasing productivity is always a positive.
Thank you for sharing this informative guide to adding essential oils to drinking water.
Also, this post reminded me to drink water, so now I’m sat reading blog posts with my water bottle at the side of me. Thank you. 😊
I love this post so much and definitely learnt a lot more about essential oils xx
Ooh I’ve never thought of this as a way to be healthy! I have peppermint tea as I know that also has benefits, and my boyfriend is always saying how important lemons are for you- I’ll have to try some of these suggestions!
I personally love essential oils and swear by them! I use them for my period all the time and they’ve been so helpful. I even have a roll on stick for headaches, however I haven’t had the chance to use it yet (thank goodness).

Title hooked me up thinking about oil and water, but when I read about all the 5 elements that you can add to your water. I totally got it. My all time favorite is lemon and sometimes I add honey to it.
Oh I never thought of adding essential oils to drinking water. I usually use them as is or to add to a diffuser. This is super interesting and I’m curious to check if the essential oils we have at home are safe to add to drinking water.
Thanks for the info. I hadn’t heard of adding essential oils to water and now I have some research to do. My aching joints will appreciate the aid.
I’ve never used essential oils in my water, but it seems like such a good idea. I usually just put the actual fruit or mint leaves, etc in my water (I always start my day with some water with a slice of lime) and that tastes great. I like the idea of the oils as an alternative to this or a booster — thanks for sharing!
Lovely idea! I use lemon essential oil for skincare products. The essential oil in drinking water is something different, I have never used. But I will try now.
Thanks for sharing.
I have never heard of adding essential oils to water so I love that you cover how to do it safely and the importance of researching before trying it.
Lemon and sweet orange both sound like amazing ones to add to water, but I also enjoy the idea of trying the tang of grapefruit!

I like the idea of using essential oils for a variety of things, but I am blind and have found measuring out by drops is extremely difficult. Do you have any recommendations on a non-visual way to measure drops of essential oils?
I’m a water lover too! I never knew you could add essential oils to water, but maybe I’ll do it with lemon 🙂 x

Wow that’s a lot of tea – in the winter I can get up to 2-3 cups but never four! Make sure you don’t have a drop with each glass of tea, just 1 drop a day to ensure you’re taking in not too much as that can be harmful. I’m glad you’re excited about the flavours and I hope you enjoy them if you give them a try – tangerine is one of my go to’s!
Fantastic to hear – lemon is so lovely with some honey! I’m so glad you enjoyed this post.

It’s a great way to add a hint of flavour if your not a fan of water! Thanks for reading.
So glad to hear this was informative, make sure to do your research and then enjoy!
Yes – definitely packed with great benefits but only after learning safe ingestion as you mentioned! Yes it could be harmful and that’s why research is so important to make sure you do it correctly or speak to a professional before doing so if you have questions. Lemon is wonderful, I’m sipping some lemon infused oil water right now!
