Should I focus on trending topics?
Trending topics are great! But, you have to plan ahead! Posting about Mother’s Day on actual Mother’s Day will leave you with very little traffic. Where are posting a Mother’s Day post a month or two before allows Google to understand your post. It allows SEO to work and gets your post in front of your ideal audience and it allows folks that are planners (who are the ones searching typically) to find your content. Think about your readers. Are they searching the day of for your content, or would it be a month or so before help?
I love trending topics, but I do suggest focusing on getting those out about 1-2 months before the trend actually hits!
Here are some examples:
Mother’s Day – post in March
Father’s Day – post in April
Back to School – Post in July
Halloween – Post in September
Christmas – Post in October/November

New Blog Post vs Updating an Old Blog Post?
I’ve heard this from numerous bloggers – the age-old debate of updating old blog posts versus putting out a new blog post. I’ve found there really isn’t one answer. For me, I do update old blog posts with new SEO and updated content IF it still aligns with my website content and is something my audience is looking for! Now, there are some blog posts from very early on that don’t align strongly with my content anymore so updating them wouldn’t have the same returns as content that aligns.
So if you have high demand blog topics that get you a lot of traffic and folks are looking for I’d update those! But for those blog topics that are more personal or aren’t what your audience is looking for then I’d leave them. Example below:
I updated my Spring Cleaning Living Room Post – this is evergreen and always searched for.
I chose not to update my 6-month blogging post as this post rarely bring in traffic and most of the content is out of date and doesn’t provide as much value to my audience anymore.
