Now, top Pinterest boards don’t need full-time management to see great results. It can be simple and honestly, it can be so helpful to your account growing and driving even more Pinterest results your way!
Want to know the best way to to update your Pinterest Board with best practices in mind?
What are Pinterest Boards?
Pinterest Boards are available through both personal accounts and business accounts. Unlike personal accounts, your Pinterest for Business boards needs to be optimized and set up for Search Engine Optimization. The reason this is important? You need the board to be working hard behind the scenes to drive Pinterest users (using the search bar) to find your content, your own products, and your blog posts.
Pinterest Boards are where a collection or group of saved pins can be found. Typically, boards are grouped by a specific topic, category, topic, or idea. Each board typically has its own theme and the pins saved to that space relate to that idea. Board covers are not necessary (more aesthetics) but an SEO-rich board title is for business owners wanting to drive more traffic to their website.
Let’s dive more into the simple and easy steps you can take to use your boards to reach your target audience and potential customers.
Pinterest Secret Boards – what are those?
Pinterest secret boards are a layer of privacy. These Pinterest pins are only able to be seen by the account holder and are not shown to the greater public when browsing your Pinterest Account and Boards.
You can turn boards into secret boards, or un-secret boards at any time. This is a great way to keep personal pins such as mood boards, business inspirations, and business ideas easily stored without it impacting your Pinterest board strategy. When pins are saved to secret boards they cannot be found by the public (wider audience), and that pin will not be able to drive any traffic to your site or business.
Your Pinterest followers will not be able to see this content, along with won’t show up with popular boards and search results by the public. Pins saved in these boards will not show up under the created tab with your regular pins.
How to create a board?
When looking to create a new Pinterest board navigate to your Pinterest for Business Account. When on your profile homepage you can see underneath your Pinterest Profile “Saved”. Click this and it will take you to your saved pin content.
This page will show you any boards created and is the place you can make more boards. To create a new board, click the “+” symbol to the left of the screen and then click “board”.
How many boards should I make?
There is no perfect science to this! As a full-time, Pinterest Strategist, I’ve seen different things work well for different Pinterest accounts. You can look at the top Pinterest influencers and see that even among their boards there is no perfect number that each of them has. What I do with my own account and clients’ accounts is create 5 boards relevant boards per business niche.
So, for example, for someone whose business focuses on interior design, I would create 5 boards dedicated to those ideas and topics. For someone who does social media marketing I might dedicate 5 to their services, and then 5 boards to blog topics surrounding being a business owner and entrepreneur.
Starting with 5 that are dedicated to topics in your business is key. From there you can expand as best suits your business and how many different offerings, niches, and topics you cover in your content.
You should only make boards that fit your business niche, not the inspiration for your million-dollar dream home or your favourite recipes (unless you have a food blog!). Each of your board topics should be reflecting content on your website, and should be a great place to showcase the main ways your content solves common problems to your audience.

How to SEO your Pinterest Boards
When naming your Pinterest Board, you should be using keywords as your Board Name Titles. It should be a searchable term that will be found by folks who search for that item. You want your content to be found and using search engine terms and phrases will help your content be found by more folks!
For Example:
Bad SEO Board Name: My favourite recipes for when I’m tired.
Good SEO Board Name: Quick and Easy Dinner Ideas
KWhen it comes to adding a business board description, you also want this to be SEO rich. You do not want keyword stuff here. Keyword stuffing is when you simply place keyword phrases one after the other, not in a sentence.
For example:
Bad SEO Board Description: Rustic Home Décor. Décor Ideas. How to decorate a home. Farmhouse Style.
Good SEO Board Description: Here you can find ideas about how to decorate a home that will help you create a beautiful farmhouse style for your living space.
How many keywords should you focus on having in your descriptions? Aim for around 5-7 per board description.
Add your own pins to each relevant board, ensuring you’re using long-tail keywords and short-tail keywords that align with that board to help your Pinterest strategy. When creating new Pinterest boards be sure to keep an eye on them after 6ish months to see what updating needs to happen (adjustments to SEO as needed).
You may also need to update specific keywords depending on if they have lost ranking or are no longer being searched. Keyword research should be part of your entire Pinterest account and a good part of your Pinterest marketing strategy.
How often should I update my boards?
Again, like the number of boards, there is no perfect answer here. Most boards should be reviewed every 3-6 months to see if there are any new or trending keywords that can help drive more eyes to your content.
At a minimum, each board should be reviewed annually, you can do this in your pinterest analytics. To be updated with new and fresh keywords to help keep those pins on the board working hard for you! Click here to learn how to schedule pins.
Without updating your Pinterest board your pins could not reach as far and are likely to be found by fewer people. Create a system that helps you remember to check in on your boards to ensure they’re still optimized with strong and relevant keywords.
